A Success Team to Put Out Fires

Some days are better than others.

This morning I got a text message from one of my tenants. The apartment building where they live was on fire.  That was at 5:42am. After speaking with the tenant he told me that the fire department was on location and had contained the blaze to six of the twenty-seven units.

By 9:00am I’d gone through the damaged units with the fire marshal and had a crew on site boarding up the windows and securing the property. The Red Cross was on location. They orchestrated housing for the displaced tenants (Thank you Red Cross!), and were helping to manage PR and crowd control.

The insurance company is scheduled to come out to the building tomorrow to assess the damage. My window company is headed to the property now for measurements. Our clean-out crew should be at the building by this evening for an estimate, and my rehabbers left the building about 11am. Within the next two weeks the apartments should be put back together and the tenants can return.

I’ve dealt with small fires before, but nothing of this scale. It’s made me appreciate the value of my success team. They’re professionalism and quick reaction time has turned a potentially awful situation into a manageable problem.

The most important thing is that no one was hurt. The fire department did their job containing the fire. The Red Cross stepped in to aid displaced residents. Any my team performed flawlessly putting the pieces back together.

All in all, this day could have been a lot worse. I’m thankful that it wasn’t.
